Hi All

I am trying to help a 14 year old boy the is Very sick in bed and wants to learn
how to edit video - His parents are both sick also and are not computer savvy-

The family has a about 2 year old Dell laptop - that is hooked to the net-
I look up the specs on the laptop but could not find if it has a Firewire connection
and the parents dont have a clue ether about FW connection

Tle Laptop has Windows Vista on it and they told me it has video editing software
that comes with Vista -

So what I want to do is have the boy download video clips from YouTube
and convert them using Zamzar.com conversion site to a file format
that he can use so that he can practice video editing -

Its been Many years since I have touched a windows PC
so I really dont remember what he should convert the files to
so that they can be edited ---

Also - IF I find out that the laptop does end up having a firewire
connection on it I would like to see if anyone has a old Mini Dv camera
that has a FW output on it that they could donate to the boy
so that he can shoot some stuff himself to edit-

If someone can donate a camera I will pay the shipping cost if necessary
and send you their address so it can be sent to them -

The boy is bed ridden so it would be nice if the cam
also has a remote -

also if you have a small light weight tripod that you could donate
that would be great --

The boys mom says that he has wanted to edit video for several
years now - so its not a passing fancy --

Im sure that the family and young boy will be very grateful and
this will give him something to do to get his mind off being sick --

Thanks for your help--Jay--

I think Vista/XP comes with Windows Movie Maker which is a nice piece of software.

You can google free video clips and perhaps come up with something better than flash files from You Tube. Or donate a bunch of your footage from home movies. Any cam that hooks up via USB will work here. Doesnt have to be FW I believe.

Good idea to get a cam with a tripod. Never know what one can come up with using that from bed.

You can get cheap cams for under $200.00 used. Maybe someone here has one lying around.

Hey Michael --

I had not thought of using USB to transfer the footage - Good Idea-
personally I have never used a usb to transfer footage -

So If any body has a extra cam with a USB out put that
would be what he needs

I think I am going to hook him up with a Lynda .com account -

Footage from bed dose not sound to appealing but I was thinking
he could do some stop action claymation type stuff -
he could burn up Many hours doing it -

The boy has been stuck in bed for the last 2 years -
and he is being home schooled so its not much of a life

The treatment they are going threw is extremely painful
and Crazy expensive -
the boy is most likely going to be stuck in bed for at least another year
or so -- its Sad -- Thanks--Jay--

How "sick" is he? What does he have (and his family for that matter)? My curiosity is peaked now.

He can also use still images. Very inexpensive. The basis of YouTube videography is downloaded stills, music and cheap editing software.

Hi All

He and his parents All have Lyme Disease - you get it from a Tick bite -
Its exteramilly painful - the best way I can describe it is like having a
raw nerve Bad Tooth ache in every part of your body 24X7 -

The pain during treatment is even worse - and depending how long
you have been sick - it can take 3 to 5 years of treatment
to get your life back somewhat -

Lyme is caused by a bacteria -The tick that gives it to you
is as small as the period at the end of this sentence .
It effects every part of your body - from brain to toes-

Ticks are Nasty bugs -- they usually carry several different germs -
each of these types of germs is bad enough by its self -
when mixed together its Horrible --

I help out on a Lyme web site and answer questions like you all do Here
about FCP -

I took up editing because I have had lyme for 21 years and I had to have a job
that I could sit down while doing and be able to work from home -

Luckily here in Austin there is one
of only about 15 doctors in the world that know how to treat this -
The last ten years I have spent 95% of my time laying in bed -

the last 3 years I have not been able to work even a editing job because I was to
sick to sit up for more than 10 minutes -- Going threw treatment -

I would buy the boy a camera but I am so broke that I am on the verge
of loosing my home --

Before I got sick I was a Industrial Designer and did R&D work for the
High TecH Industry - The craziest thing I ever worked on was a
Atomic Explosion detector for the Air Force -

We used to have a joke that the easiest way to see if a Abomb went off
was to just open the door to the outside and if it still there --No Bomb -

Anyways I want All of you to Be Careful when walking threw grass and brush-
check your self after doing anything where ticks may be -

Remember -
Just One Bite and You Will be Me and You Dont want to be me --

Here is a Link to the Lyme site that I help out on -
My user name is Groovy2 ---- Thanks you guys ---Jay---

hey, Jay.

my experience is MAc only.
for a recent doco we needed some archival material quick.
we knew we would get it in the end, but in the short term we accessed stuff from you tube and google video.

i could never get any of the donwload and conversion techniques to work,
maybe on a PC it'll be better.
(or maybe a teenage will figure it out!)
but our solution was direct and simple:
we used screen-capture software iShowU ($20) to simply record the images off the desktop.

grabbing this you Tube video made me realise that you could pretty much create a whole movie without ever having to leave the house, or even get out of bed.

as far as screen-grabbing goes, you can pretty much grab any size area at al,
but FCP likes the standard video dimensions best.
so we set up a capture setting that grabbed standard def frame size.
we had to then blow the image up in FCP,
but i probably could have used Control + scroll wheel to enlarge the screen.

alternatively, for $40 you can get iShowU AND a simple video conversion tool called Stomp (kind of an i-Compressor)
grab the small you-Tube video, and blow it up to a standard video size.

hope these suggestions help,
nick
