How Do I transfer P2 camera shots from a folder into FCP. HVX 200
August 03, 2008 03:06PM
In the heat of a production moment I was forced to drag and drop my "contents" folder and "LASTCLIP.TXT" file off of my Panasonic HVX 200 P2 card and onto a hard drive because I needed to free up a P2 card immediately to shoot more. No I am having trouble to "Log and Transfer' this content into Final Cut Pro to work with. I thought someone might have some insight on what I should do.

Thanks

What trouble are you having? What happens when you add the folder?

hate to jump right to this, but is the drive by any chance a western digital or lacie product?

Don't have much seat time in P2 at the moment; but besides the fact that I have two clients using LaCie D2 Quadras to uneventfully Log and Transfer footage from P2 or Firestore from HVX-200's, what is it about LaCie drives that might be affecting ctalley?

The only thing I come up with is "formatted for PC." But if ctalley bought from a Mac store or site, it's likely preformatted for Mac.

BTW, BareFeats.com seems to like Western Digital's Velociraptor series. Besides the fact that I've been daily booting my Mac from two ATA WD drives for several years. Working fine with clean voltage fed to the tower form my UPS unit, and regular disk maintenance.

But as for actual editing of DVCProHD from tape or card, I would look at SATA, hands down.

Just my .02.

maybe i was premature in conjuring up (yet another) lacie/WD debate (i hate to get that black hole going again) but statistics dont lie. LaCie is only THE most frequent name in drive failure discussions...

dragging and dropping contents and last clip onto a hard drive is precisely what youre supposed to do (well, its one way to do it). dont know why there would be problems? - its how ive done it for more than a year without a single hiccup.

my process is usually:
1. create new folder on destination drive (either powerbook internal OR external FW800)
2. open p2 volume and select all (both content and lastclip)
3. drag that to the new folder

we're going to need more details from ctalley to diagnose further...

Sorry to get back so slowly, I have been shooting in a remote location for some time.

Ok, So I basically dragged the contents and last clip from my macbook pro hard drive to an external firewire 400 G Drive to organize the footage. So now when I open the folder containing the contents and last clip file in the "Log and Transfer" window everything looks fine until I name each clip and drop them into the que. At first it looks fine then as each clip is transferring the small swirling logo on the left turns into a red stop sign with an exclamation mark on it as it moves on to the next clip.

And when I look in the capture scratch folder it always transfers a few clips but names them with odd alphabetical and numerical names different from what i named them in the log and transfer pane. This is bad news for me since I have a job with a deadline. I am open to phone discussion from an expert as well.

#36 - One or More P2 files failed to import.

Shane's Stock Answer #36 - "One or more clips failed to import..."

Very often in the field with this camera the camera operator will delete clips from the P2 card that they just don't like. That is the beauty of this camera. But, the still for that video file (located in the CLIP folder in the CONTENTS folder)...the still that you see when you are in the P2 Import window...is not deleted. So you will see the image, and the name, but the video file would have been deleted.

What you can do it compare the file names in the VIDEO folder and CLIP folder and see if anything is missing. If something is, then you know what the problem is. You can then just import the rest a few at time, skipping that one.

ALSO...in the P2 Import window...in the P2 Browser, there is a little sprocket drop down menu. Click on that and choose PREFERENCES. Uncheck REMOVE PULLDOWN and then try importing again.

ALSO...make sure your file names aren't too long. Try shortening them and see if that works.
