unscientific speed test - macbook pro vs. g5 quad

ok, these arent exactly apples to apples, (nor precisely scientific - 2 machines and a stopwatch) but here's the scoop for anyone thinking of upgrading from a top end desktop g5 to a top end macbook pro :

macbook pro intel core2duo 2.5 17" 2 gigs ram, firewire800
g5 quad 2.5 4 gigs ram, firewire800
(dont know to what degree the 2x ram of the g5 had to do with results)

same project, same scratch settings, same version of FCP.
30 second tv spot, mix of SD and HD material, 7 composited layers

macbook pro: 3:15
g5 quad: 2:59

as a side note. same project on g5 quad
firewire800: 2:59

if you are tryng to show that the MacBook Pro is as good as the G5, then I agree. I have not done any specific testing on my MacBook Pro 2.33 GHz vs my Quad G5, but when using them I feel the MBP is at least equivalent to my G5 and in some cases faster.

Apple G5 Quad 2.5 Ghz - 4.5 Gb Ram - 250 Gb - 1.5 TB RAID5 (4 stripe)--
Apple MacBook Pro 2.33 Ghz - 2 GB Ram - 320 GB(5400rpm) - 2 x 500 GB eSATA drives though Express 34 slot card.

Both are running Leopard 10.5.3, Qt 7.5, Final Cut Studio 2, Logic Studio, etc.

my motivation was more or less selfish, as im contemplating my evolve to intel and thought that mobile suited my needs.

my fear was that there would be things where the quad (especially being a desktop) would still be markedly faster. but found comfort in even where those things were (opening a big 2+gig photoshop file, applying a 22 pixel gausian blur to that file) it was no more than about 10-20 seconds difference...

only thing i didnt do was big high end dvd encodes
