unreadable projects

With recurring frequency, I've been encountering the message "The project is unreadable or may be too new for this version of Final Cut" upon opening a project. I've changed nothing on my computer or the FCP version I'm using (6.0). This problem was reported by another user in March, and not addressed.

There was an issue a while ago on moving projects between machines. Apple supposedly fixed it by FCP 6.0.3. Try updating FCP?

We have had that problem here, as well. I have never been able to track it down.

I will say that it only occurs to our users with poor workflow (media on desktop, media scattered, bad sequence management, needlessly long sequences), and that almost always (and perhaps just "always"winking smiley, we're able to recover to an autosave version from not too far in the past.

Someone from LAFCPUG recommended manually saving to a new project once or twice a day, and I adopted that. That way you're never more than 4 hours from a re-start, even if the worst was to happen. I keep mine on a thumbdrive. Furthermore, when I'm working on a big project, I do a Media Managed version once or twice a week to an external hard drive. Cheap insurance, IMHO.

It had to do with either missing media (such as media on other people's computers that FCP couldn't find) or permissions issues, say if you only had READ permission on a drive.

But they are right...that was fixed in 6.0.3 and 6.0.4.
