can't trash unwanted media

Somehow, I managed to duplicate media files on a backup drive, which I now cannot delete because a popup message tells me "backup items can't be modifed." Did Time Machine have something to do with this? What's the solution?

Haven't seen this pop up before.... Hit "apple I" on the drive in the finder, is "ignore ownership on volume" checked? Are the folders locked?
