can't establish firewire connection

can't establish firewire connection

Upon trying to capture HD video from a Canon HV20, the highlighted camera menu selection (HDV/DV) disappears as soon as the fire wire is connected to it. This occurs no matter what order I do things; i.e., turn on the computer, select "log & capture," or connect the devices (I've tried every combination).

Could this problem have anything to do with FCP (I have V6.0) not recognizing the external device, or is it more likely something in my hardware? I seem to have no problem capturing down-converted media from the same source.

What easy set up you using?

Okay, a good start, because I wasn't paying attention to the setting and it was wrong. But now that I've set it to DVCPRO 1080i60 (which I assume is correct), I'm still not able to establish a connection to the camera, and the DV OUTPUT menu choice is still grayed out... In fact, shouldn't HDV/DV light up before I've even selected log & capture?

You should be on an HDV setting. You can also try using the "firewire basic" preset, since you're working on a Canon...

Many thanks for straightening me out on the setup. From the larger capture window that now appears, and from the full set of log & capture commands that are now at my disposal, I now seem to be able to capture HD just fine.

But I'm still disturbed by the lack of the highlighted camera-menu selection "HDV/DV." It reappears when I unplug the firewire, but grays out when I'm connected... Hardware problem? Anything to be concerned about if I'm able to capture?

Nope. As standard procedures goes, double check that timecode is accurate, and check clip properties to make sure the settings are right.

I'm stuck. Appears I can't capture after all -- not even on the fly. I do have control of the device, though, with the enlarged HD window showing up in FCP... So it's the ability to capture in HD that seems to remain disabled (no problem downconverting). What other settings or diagnostics could I be overlooking?

Sounds like a camera setting you're missing. Just to double check, you have the HDV log and capture window open (it looks different from a normal log and capture window)..

Sorry I don't have a Canon camera, but this could be helpful:

I just ran a test with a Canon H1, connected to a different computer and different editing software, and it produced the problem: the readout for the HD connection display grays out when the fire wire is connected; relights when it's not. So maybe this is normal for Canons.

What's mystifying in both cases is that while able to capture on the fly, I'm unable to batch-capture or capture from in-point to out-point on a selected clip, the way I can with standard def. Any clues based on that?

Sounds like what the link I referred you to described. I haven't worked with HDV for a few months, so I'm a little fuzzy on it, but from what I can remember, you can do a batch capture on it.

Playback STD is 'blacked out' anytime a cable is in the HV30's HDV/DV terminal. Page 42 of the manual: "The DV output cannot be changed while a DV cable is connected to the HDV/DV terminal." Remove the cable and Playback STD becomes active again.

So, first make sure you're in the correct record mode: In the REC/IN SETUP menu, choose the video standard: HDV, HDV(PF24), HDV(PF30), DV(WIDE) or DV(NORMAL)

Next, in the PLAY/OUT SETUP1 menu in the PLAYBACK STD window (when the HV30 doesn't have a firewire cable connected to it) there are three choices: AUTO, HDV and DV. If you've made both HDV and DV recordings on the same tape, the AUTO setting automatically switches playback from one format to the other. In the HDV or DV setting, only recordings made in the selected mode will play back.

In the PLAY/OUT SETUP2 menu check to ensure 'HDV/DV' is selected. If 'DV DV LOCKED' is selected, everything recorded in HDV will be output as DV.

Finally, as I mentioned in the earlier post, use the FCP Easy Setup to match the HV30's output. If you set 'HDV' in the REC/IN SETUP menu, and 'Auto' and 'HDV/DV' in the PLAY/OUT SETUP1 and 2 menus, then the FCP Easy Setup would be 'HDV-1080i60' Firewire Basic'

A couple other reasons why the HV30 or any digital camcorder won't communicate with a video editing program: The camcorder is in the Record mode rather than the Play mode, or, could be a bad firewire cable.

Thanks for explicating this process so thoroughly, and removing so much of the clutter. Happily, I'm able to capture using the recommended HDV 1080i60 Firewire Basic.

I'm also heartened to know my camera's connection display is functioning properly, but would like to inform other HV20 & HV30 owners that the manual instruction you cite above is later followed on p. 76 by this confusing (and erroneous) statement: "When the connection is recognized, HDV/DV will be displayed."

Wrong! When the connection is recognized, that display will disappear, replaced by gray dashes.

The general troubleshooting point to note in capturing firewire signals, is that you're able to get a signal at all. It shows that the port is working.
