23.98 to exactly 11 minutes

Hello All,

Hoping you can help us out on this issue. We're editing an animated 11 minute episode in 23.98 for eventual broadcast. We need the sequence to be exactly 11 minutes (or at least within a couple frames) before sending it off to our animators.

Due to drop frame and conversion into 29.97 for SD output (on digital betacam), we're trying to make sure that we're editing shows to length before sending them off to others for animation.

So do we need to adjust our sequence to a lesser time (i.e., 00:10:59:03) in order for it to come out as exactly 11 minutes?

Looking forward to the discussion. Thanks!

Yup. And you should use a timecode calculator that can do NDF/DF conversions to help you...

Like the one I mention here:

Also mentioned there is a way to determine what the show timing is via FCP...a little trickery involved using SLUG. Well, there is a link to the post where I explain that.

But I prefer the calculator.

Thanks. I downloaded the calculator. But ...

Every time I put in 00:11:00;02 at 23.98 NDF and convert it to 29.97 DF I get 00:08:48;18.
(sidenote: 00:11:00;02 is necessary because it kicks 00:11:00;00 out as an invalid time code)
If I take that same calculation but use 23.98 DF into 29.97 DF, I get 00:08:48;02.

This does not make sense to me. Given 11 minutes, theoretically, shouldn't we should be at about 00:00:00;21 to 00:00:00;30 off? 00:02:12;00 seems awfully extreme of a difference.

Please advise. Maybe I'm using the calculator incorrectly as Shane stated in that blog.

Thanks,
-Travis-

You have to choose the 24DF option. DF doesn't exist in the real world, but that calculator has that option SPECIFICALLY so you can get proper timing. SO don't go from 23.98NDF to 29.97DF. Use the 24DF option. or is it 23.98DF option? I forget.
