can't get letterboxed 16x9 frame

I've just captured some 16:9 DV footage and cannot get it to appear in either the viewer or canvas as as cleanly letterboxed horizontal frame. It appears as an "enlarged" square that I either have to shrink to 50% or rock right and left in order to see in its entirety.

Not quite sure what I've done wrong here, as I've worked with this format before, and it's looked good in both windows. Timeline isn't right either, and changing the settings hasn't solved the problem. (Some 4x3 captured in the same project looks fine, and I've mixed and matched the two formats in the past).

Your Viewer/Canvas display size is set wrong. (The button with the per centage number on it above your image) Set it to Fit to Window. As for 16:9, read this:
