If someone develops a plug-in for removing zits...it will be very well received. Unfortunately, since your actor is 99.99999% most definitely moving around (not locked down), you will have to rotoscope & paint every frame...period. Gonna need someone that is very experienced in After Effects, Photoshop Extended or an equivalent app.

You should kick your camera op for not pointing that out during the shoot.

You can over expose the image slightly, or apply a silk, or beauty filter effect that will soften the image. Most of the plugins out for this use are designed to soften up lines on the face, not blemishes, and all they're really doing is some targeted color correction. Depending on your use, you can also try a more extreme film look that may blow out the details, but it would need to work for the entire scene in order to match.

This plug in was amazing for an interview subject we had with severe acne - they weren't moving around a lot - just a head and shoulders shot -- CoreMelt Editing Pack's Dewrinkler

This example doesn't really show how well it works - but it does.

PAt Sheffield, the guy who made that Electronic Makeup Artist is, IN FACT, working on a plugin that does exactly what you want. The beta is called ZITZAP and it works wonders.

It is still in beta but is due out soon.

Joe points out the camera op should have flagged this issue and I agree to a point, but the blame also lays with your makeup artist. A good makeup artist will bring the talent to set and look at him/her under the set lighting and on the production monitor to determine if there are issues like this that he/she can fix before the cameras roll. Most of the top makeup artists I hire actually stay on set with me and stand just to right of video village and keep an eye on this, unless they are busy making up other talent, then they have an assistant do it. This is a perfect example of something that 10 minutes in the chair with a good makeup artist could have totally saved. If you didn't hire a makeup artist than this is your own fault and a good example of why quality hair and makeup artists are worth their weight in Gold. I really dislike shooting talent without a makeup artist.

I do my own powder and light hair when needed but I always want a pro hair and makeup artist, they are the second most important position in low budget production, right after a sound mixer in my book.

Just like sound issues, it drives me crazy when post people are charged with solving vexing production issues that turn out to be incomplete, expensive and a headache. These are issues that if handled correctly by the director and producer, save untold stress and dollars in post. Ask any post production specialist and they will tell you that "fix it in post" is the biggest waste of money in film making.

I have a new plugin whose working title was ZitZap - it's since been named Digital Coverup that may help you out... Unfortunately, it's not available for purchase thru the store just yet...

You click on the "blemish" color and then on regular skin tone, set some parameters and go...

Electronic Makeup Artist might help you out - demo of it is at

Patrick,

That looks absolutely amazing. Can you post a before & after treated clip? I am very interested to see how the filter works from frame to frame while playing.

On most movies there's several levels of checks. On a low budget movie you'd blame the makeup artist, the director and the DP. Amazing that all 3 missed this.
With After Effects I'd copy and paste a small mask of some clear skin, feather the edges, then turn down the opacity as little as needed to make it look unaltered. This type of touch-up work is my specialty, at least as far as strictly using After Effects. I spent 9 months doing touch-ups on a movie, some of which was stuff along these lines.
