This may not be the right place to ask, but the time is right.

I chose the Panasonic AG-HVX200A mainly because of its dual P2 card/MiniDV capabilities; I still will be using DV for a while. I loved the idea of just playback legacy MiniDV tapes to dub them onto the card, instead of having to log-capture them. But it seems that there's no way to do that. If there is, please share how to do it.
Thanks in advance.

Im not sure you want to take your DV tapes to card, i can't think of any real reason to do that.

To get to card, you have to dub your tape. why not just capture to FCP at this stage? If you dub to P2, you then have to transfer that disk and then pull you clip out from that card data through Log & Transfer.

P2 Cards are really just a transfer medium from camera to harddisk. Log and Capture will get your footage to disk in a much better efficient way

You can shoot DV to the cards from now on (bypassing tapes) but no, you can't dub internally like that.

"Im not sure you want to take your DV tapes to card, i can't think of any real reason to do that. "

Scott,

Sorry I left out that the dubbing deals primarily with analog video that I must use (via the VHX200's composite in/out ports). I would like to avoid dubbing onto the built in MiniDV or capture on the fly, as I do now using "non-controllable device", in order to have an editable QT mov clip. I was hoping to be able to dub directly to the card so I can get that video later already as QT clips through Log and Transfer, as I do when recording on the P2 card.

John! I was afraid of that. I just cannot make the card record what comes through the in/out composite ports.
Thanks to both!

Should also point out that the P2 system does not produce QT clips when recording. The data will be broken up into multiple files that FCP will convert into QTs during the Log and Transfer process. It is faster than capturing DV in real time, but it's still not an instant conversion.

What you're talking about is basic pass-through from analog input, which a deck could do but I've never tried that with an HVX. I don't know if that works with this camera, or if it would even pass through directly to the P2 cards...

Nope, not possible on this camera.

Thanks, Dan. Yes, the HVX is great as a pass-through device. It helps me capture analog video and dub DV tapes - on the spot - that's been shot by our university specialists. But of course, in order to use it I need to capture using my Macbook Pro, or use "Capture Now".
Again, it'd be better if I could just do transfer to the P2 card.
I wish Panasonic would make that possible.

Don't really get what you're trying to here. In most cases, you do not want to pump DV tape to P2 cards as they are very expensive storage devices. Also, P2 will break up your file into 4 gig chunks as it uses a FAT32 file system.

If you're capturing from an analog source, you can capture as QT. Not sure why you want it on P2 cards/mxf.
