Best choice for export?

Hi,

This is my first project using an HD sequence. Footage was shot on an HVX200 in 720p60.

My FCP sequence is 960x720. Footage looks fine. all is well. (I used the sequence preset for DVCPro HD).

When I'm done, I have to provide a QT file for the web, which they convert to Flash. (They can run it in 16:9.)

What's the best setting for export when I get to that point? Something 16:9-ish in QT, or should I use something in Compressor?

Thanks in advance,

Paul C.

Flash accepts h.264. Export a self contained QT movie and encode it in Compressor. File size depends on what they can afford. Naturally, a higher bitrate is better, and not lower than 1Mb/s.

I never use compressor for this. I export "Using Quicktime Conversion" and use the following settings:

Click "Settings":

* Compression Type: H.264
* Frame Rate: 29.97
* Key Frames: Automatic
* Data Rate: Restrict to 8000 kbits/sec (since this is being converted to FLASH, I would give them this clean high data rate)
* Quality: Best quality (Multi-pass)

Click OK. Now click "Size":

* Dimensions: Custom 1280 x 720
* leave the 2 boxes below that unchecked

Click OK. Now check the box "Sound" and click "Settings":

(If the movie is going to be re-compressed, use the following)
* Format: Linear PCM
* Channels: Stereo (L R) unless you have some other mix going
* Rate: 48.00 khz
* Quality: Normal
* Sample Size: 16 bits

Click OK.

Uncheck "Prepare for Internet Streaming"

Click OK.

Choose your path for the file to export to - click "Save"

I'll give it a shot.

Thanks again.

Better still:

Use Joe's recommended settings, only change them to match what your Flash developer will use on the web.

Current versions of Flash can use H.264 directly - There's no need to re-compress or convert, so long as you provide files with the data rate, size, etc suitable for the web.

Samples of h.264 HD material, output from FCP6 at various data rates can be viewed at:
