trivial at best:

wondered if anyone knows if there is any significance to the 4:24:48:20 timecode in the slate graphic on the FCP startup screen?

That's exactly how long it takes ? four hours, 24 minutes, 48 seconds and 20 frames ? to install Final Cut Studio from the DVDs that come in the box.

As a minor piece of trivia, it used to be 4:24:48:29, but got changed, I think in v3 or 4 because the PAL people were offended or something.

I thought it was how long one had to listen to an AVID editor complain about FCP before they just shut up and cut something.

Only if the "4" refers to years, Andrew.

Or it could mean hours if the FCP editor was the one who just gives up listening and just cuts something while the whiner is left to whine into the wind as the buttressed walls of civilization crumble around them until all we have left is Peter Ustinov and his cats to show us the folly of our youth obsessed culture. "Cynics" not "critics"

Critics should have something constructive to say... tongue sticking out smiley

I read this on another board - at least we have something a little less Autistic to say about our lovely Digi-slate!

Question

Dear 100 Hour Board,

When you open the Academic version of Final Cut Pro, the opening screen comes up as the program loads. The icon on this screen is the classic film slate used in logging footage, yet this particular slate has red numbers listed across the top: 4:24:48:20. I highly doubt they are random, but what could they mean?

- Paprika

Answer

Dear Paprika,

Traditionally, clapperboards have been used to synchronize video and audio footage while filming. The editor can align the sound from the clap with the visual cue of the closing clap, thus ensuring that the video and audio will be in sync.

As digital technology has become more prevalent, the SMPTE timecode system has become increasingly common. This system encodes the time code on both the video and audio recording, making syncronization simpler. Digital clapperboards display the current time to make the editor's job even easier.

SMPTE timecodes use the hour:minute:seconds:frame format. In traditional film (not television) systems, there are 24 frames per second. Therefore, the timecode shown in Final Cut Pro represents 4 hours, 24 minutes, 48 seconds, and 20th frame.

Have a nice day!

-Yellow

Apparently 4:24:48:20 is a sequence of 4 answers (out of the full 65) to the equation:

a^2+b^2+3*c^2+3*d^2=n

[1,4,4,4,20,24,4,32,52,4,24,48,20,56,32,24,116,72,
4,80,120,32,48,96,52,124,56,4,160,120,24,128,244,
48,72,192,20,152,80,56,312,168,32,176,240,24,96,
192,116,228,124,72,280,216,4,288,416,80,120,240,
120,248,128,32,500]

Listen here to the full sequence expressed on an 88-key keyboard: [loudandfast.co.uk]

or the 4:24:48:20 looped! [loudandfast.co.uk]

Spooky!

If I could waste my time doing stuff like that and NOT answering stupid forum questions, I'd do it. But I don't have access to a piano.

I could try to learn the harmonica. I wonder what this would sound like on the harmonica...

I didn't see this in the responses (I think) but they are all even numbers.

4:24:48:20 means that the FCP team of developers smoked herb (hence, the 4:20) 24 hours a day for 2 days, after finally completing FCP, at a party. I know this - My Brother - In - Law worked as a creative consultant several years ago. He told me that he met Steve Jobs. Super cool guy. Anyway, that's what 4:24:48:20 means. smiling smiley
