I'm being asked to create an effect where the clients logo transcends from smoke.
I found the Smoke in Motion. It's perfect. I have the logo now as an Illustrator file.
Is there a way to make it look as if the logo is being formed slowly from the rising smoke?
Thanks Guys.

gradient wipe.

Thanks, but that's to easy. I need the logo to look like its being formed from the rising smoke.
It will build the logo from the top down until it's all logo and no smoke.

if you need it to build from the actual smoke clip you have. you could export a pict sequence of the smoke. do a hi-con in photoshop. batch it. then reimport that as a mask.

or you could do several layered maskshape+feather processes in FCP

"gradient wipe' will not make the logo look like "it is being formed slowly from the rising smoke". It will simply wipe the loggo on based on the gradient properties. Not what you want.

This is an advanced technique that uses Displacement Mapping to make the logo take on the shapes and characteristics of the smoke. Also Compound Blur is used (blurs the light areas of a clip only).

I recommend in order for this not to look cheesy, this technique should be accomplished in After Effects.

Exactly!!! but in reverse.
I realize now FCP can't do this, but can MOTION?

Buy yes, that effect precisely.

Yeah AE would be the way to go - possibly using Trapcode Particular - check out the last 2 clips of this reel:

Not sure you can do this in FCP or in Motion easily hence why Joey said After Effects! I would also do this in AE not FCP or Motion.

Guys, Thanks a lot, really.
I wish there was a way for Motion to do this (I know I posted in the wrong forum now)
But I know that I can get it done.

I know a guy who did this for me in Motion in 15 min. Looked great.

Maybe Peter Wigins's not yet released ParticleMetrix will provide the "Easy" button for this one? Does smoke count as a particle?

there are SO many ways you could fake it with masks and gradients in fcp.
it wouldnt be perfect but it would work...

I think ParticleMetrix along with some serious blurring might do the job nicely - I will have to look into that myself.

Here's another cool one that could be tweaked to look like smoke: Trapcode Form (Text to Sand)

Lots to be happy about lately:

* Tiger10 cycle is complete (game went GOLD yesterday - shipping June 8th) which ends the most insanely stress-filled-jump-out-of-a-window-if-I-had-one-in-my-edit-suite-busy 3 month cycle of my life in this business. My Dr. even took me off one of my HBP meds!

* My MaxxDigital RAID hasn't kicked me off in 2 weeks (no comment - don't ask)

* EA Stock is up.

* Magic beat the Cavs last night

* My family still loves me

AAAAAAaaaaaaAAAAAAaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh....life is good grinning smiley

We are talking about smoke yes?

Smoke is light

light is good

and smiling is good too!

So not really a hijack - more of a creative progression...

Besides unless there is anything else to add surely we've covered the main alternatives of the post request and can relax with a beer and a war story?
