"gradient wipe' will not make the logo look like "it is being formed slowly from the rising smoke". It will simply wipe the loggo on based on the gradient properties. Not what you want.
This is an advanced technique that uses Displacement Mapping to make the logo take on the shapes and characteristics of the smoke. Also Compound Blur is used (blurs the light areas of a clip only).
I recommend in order for this not to look cheesy, this technique should be accomplished in After Effects.

Not sure you can do this in FCP or in Motion easily hence why Joey said After Effects! I would also do this in AE not FCP or Motion.

I think ParticleMetrix along with some serious blurring might do the job nicely - I will have to look into that myself.

Lots to be happy about lately:
* Tiger10 cycle is complete (game went GOLD yesterday - shipping June 8th) which ends the most insanely stress-filled-jump-out-of-a-window-if-I-had-one-in-my-edit-suite-busy 3 month cycle of my life in this business. My Dr. even took me off one of my HBP meds!
