FCP sequence to iMovie- Best Practice?
May 21, 2009 06:51PM
HI! I have a FCP sequence with 1280x720 HDTV 720p (16:9) Compressor Settings (under sequence settings) says XDCam EX 720p24 35mb/s vbr

Wanted to edit in FCP then put into iMovie, what are the best settings I should use for the export? Thank you so much! Jennifer

Why not export from FCP?

I want to be able to use the easy titles in iMovie, I know i should learn motion but dont have enough time today! Also, its so easy to share in iMovie with YouTube, Facebook, MObileMe, email, and to iDVD, just curious if i could do the video and sound editing in FCP and then finish up in iMovie and iDVD for speed and ease of use. Any ideas? Thank you so much! Jennifer

basically you just need to know what formats iMovie will deal with
wish i knew and could help.

i imagine someone here will know,
and you might also want to ask this over on Apple's iMovie forum.

We don't use Compressor in conjunction with iDVD.

Export from FCP File > Export > QT (Not with Conversion). Make Self Contained, Use Current Settings, Do Not Recompress all frames.

Drop the QT export into iDVD. iDVD will do the compression.

thank you so much! Will this type of export work to iMovie?
Also, in fcp how do I mix footage with two diff frame rates?
One is 23 .97 and other one 29.97? Do I have to convert one?
And once I go to idvd does it go to 29.97 anyway? Thank u!!!

You'll have to Import the video (clips) from FCP into iMovie.

When you import video into iMovie, it gets transcoded to AIC. I did test with different frame rates (imported different rates into one project) and iMovie seem to handle it all.

Thank you! I didnt see exact practices though for FCP to iMovie, I have been trying fcp sequence to export QT, but it sometimes only gets part of the video, then I added in and outs and highlighted all
it also doesnt show my chapter markers, it only shows one after its in iMOvie. not sure what I am doing wrong. Do I have to highlight the sequence or no? Thanks a ton! I appreciate your iMovie and iDVD tutorials as well!

Not really sure what you are trying to do.

You are exporting from FCP, right? Where do you want to go, into iMovie?

After you have exported your FCP self contained QT movie, open iMovie and from the File menu > Import.

I did do that and it worked except my fcp markers didnt make it across, I did add markers every three minutes in idvd but it didnt make a scene selection menu like it usually does.

I just tested and it worked for me. Open the graphical view in iDVD, you should be able to see your chapters and menus.

When I click on the button for the video (track) in the main menu, after adding chapter markers, it takes me to a new menu that does have 'Play Movie' and 'Scene Selection' menus.
