Configuring internal RAID

Carpboy still building a computer here!

Is a RAID even necessary for working with SD and HDV 1080i?

If so,

Will the RocketRAID eSATA for Mac be appropriate for a 3 TB internal RAID on a MacPro Tower?

It's certainly more economical than the apple raid card and evidently twice as fast.

would that be too much heat in the tower?

Would an external RAID be safer? ...like a Caldigit 2000GB Mini

I still need an external backup even if all my primary storage is in the tower ...right?

I'm trying to stay around $6,000 and having a hell of a time.

Nope. I edit ProRes using single internal SATA drives. No raiding at all. HDV has a much lower data rate, and will be fine.

Unless you get the CalDigit RAID card (half price of Apple's) and stripe them RAID 5. That is a protected raid. Raid 0, or single drives...lose one and you lose your footage. So you can backup to another drive to be safe.

Just for storage? How many TB? You can do a lot with that amount.

Whew!! That just saved me a $1000.

Pro-res SD or HDV leaves me plenty of room to work with 3 TB of internal storage, no RAID required.

right?

Right.
