FCP won't let me copy audio channel into timeline
August 12, 2009 10:44PM
I record with one external mic going to two channels on my dvx 100a. I set ch 1 to record at a higher volume than ch 2. I capture to FCP 6 as 2 mono channels.

When I find ch 1 is clipping in the timeline I delete it and have attempted to copy ch 2 (recorded at lower level) into Audio track 1 but FCP won't let me. The playhead in the timeline just jumps to where the edit would end.

I figured out if I only capture one channel, I can then place it in Audio track 1 & 2 in the timeline, but that's a lot of extra work.

Any suggestions?

Try grabbing the audio on A2, holding option and shift and dragging upwards. This will .. actually, I just re read that and Im not sure if I understand what you're doing.

You have one dual mono audio clip that you add to the timeline only on A1, is that correct? So just channel one on A1. Then when this is too loud, you delete the offending audio.

What you should do than is just place your playhead at the point you want to add ch2 audio, change your patching so that Audio channel 2 is routed to A2, mark in an out and then add.

Am I following you correctly?

Thanks, what I failed to do is set an in and out point on the timeline. Once I did that, it worked!

No, that had nothing to do with it.

When you copy a clip in the timeline, it will paste to the same track it came from unless you change the Auto-Select buttons (the black dots on the left). If you make any change to those buttons, then the paste will happen to the first track with the button activated.

The playhead wasn't jumping, per se; you were copying the clip, then pasting it back on top of itself in its old position, so there was no visible change.

So, here are three ways to do what you had wanted:

a) After you copy, press OPTION-1 (the keypad on the right, not the numbers on top), then OPTION-1 again. You're basically toggling A1 off and then back on. This will reset the Auto-Select buttons so that the copied clip will paste to Track A1. Or:

b) Don't touch the Auto-Select buttons. Copy the A2 clip. Move the clip up one track to A1, then paste. Since the copied clip was copied from A2, it will paste onto A2, leaving the original now on A1 and the copy on A2. So you basically moved the original and pasted a copy of it in its old place. Or:

c) My favourite way: Double-click the A2 clip to open it into the Viewer, then drag it back down onto A2.
