So is Apple ProRes Proxy the new replacement for Apple intermediate codec?

I ask cause I'm trying to get out of working with HDV, but I just don't have the storage capacity for regular ProRes and I don't have all Intel machines so effect can't be done on a couple of the G5's.

ProRes 422 (Proxy) is a low-data-rate format for offlining only. It's definitely not suitable for finishing under any circumstances.

And AIC sucks. No TIMECODE support, which is absolutely crucial. So if you have a G5, and don't want to work HDV native, and can't use ProREs...then capture HDV as DVCPRO HD. You will need an HD capture device to do this...

I would try ProRes LT. It takes less space than ProRes 422 and looks really good.

I dunno, to my eyes ProRes proxy looks pretty good. Wouldn't want to finish with it but compared to a lot of the older 'finishing' codecs we once used in QT Player it's pretty sharp and clean.

I agree. Prores proxy is scary good. Have to squint hard.

Proxy isn't bad, but for a good sweet spot, LT does the job!
