Windows MPEG QT files will not transfer

I have to copy some QT MPEG files from a windows system to my mac using a Western Digital external hard drive. But they will not copy. I either get an error message, or the files will not open once they are transfered, or the spinning, multi-coloured ball appears and I have to shut down my mac.
Other file types like AVI or m2t transfer fine, though m2t's have to be converted afterwards they work fine.
This looks like a mac incompatibility issue but the weird thing is that they are QT files.
Any ideas?

First thing to determine is: Will the .mov file play in Quicktime on the Windows machine?

If they play in Quicktime, it's entirely possible that the file uses a codec which is installed on the Windows machine, but not the Mac.

In Quicktime, on the Windows machine, go to "Window/Show Movie Inspector" to determine file format information. Make sure the Codec is also available on your Mac.
