P2 importing- the 12:22:12 issue
October 10, 2009 04:26PM
I am having the dreaded "incomplete" import issue when trying to import from my P2 cards (shot on my HVX 200).

ALL of the files that are 12:22:12 in length appear as incomplete and I get an error message when I try to import them.

I have tried the following:

Log and Transfer in FCP. "Error when trying to transfer"
P2 Log Pro. "An error occurred..."
Copy paste from P2 card onto hard drive then try FCP and P2 log from the copied files. Still no luck...

All of the above on a second computer...

All of the other files are fine - just the 12:22:12 files are the issue.

Has anyone had and luck with this issue?

Such a tease- I can see the footage in Preview and just can't get it to QT on a drive...

Thanks!

Troy

How can you get clips specifically of that duration? I'm guessing that these are spanned clips and they are broken up because they exceed 4 GBs. If they are spanned across 2 cards, both cards need to be loaded into L&T or L&T won't join the clips together.

Did you copy the lastclip.txt file?

You could try messing around with P2CMS application. I recall there was a function that will join spanned clips together. (make a duplicate of the originals first).

As strypes said these clips are probably spanned. This does need all cards of the 'complete' clip to be loaded and then it should work.
But on the other hand if you stuck with all files of this duration it seems that you got large size cards with spanned clips on one card.

So please let us know about the P2 card details and the codec.

Also -- in Germany we would say: better don't paint the devil on the wall -- if you used 'P2 Log Pro', this app might have destroyed the 'span info' within the P2 XMLs without notifying you and you might have got into this trouble because of this. There had been others.
Have a look at the P2 XML of those clips and search for 'Relation' this info needs to be complete like:

<Relation>
<OffsetInShot>0</OffsetInShot>
<GlobalShotID>060A2B340101010501010D431300000082598A0F444405E10080458228C9729D</GlobalShotID>
<Connection>

<ClipName>011138</ClipName>

<P2SerialNo.>AAE07F0032</P2SerialNo.>

<ClipName>0001S9</ClipName>

<P2SerialNo.>AAE07F0780</P2SerialNo.>
</Next>
</Connection>
</Relation>

If that's not there, you got bad luck, but you can contact me -- I helped others out of this dilemma.

Next option is to split those clips in 'Log & Transfer' into smaller duration clips. There had been issues with long clip durations in L&T.

Another option -- your clips are long (and they seem to be DV50) -- is to rename the clips in the 'VIDEO' folder within the P2 'CONTENT' folder from xxxxxx.MXF to xxxxxx.dv and then drag those file to FCP. You should try this only if the codec is DV25 or DV50 and with a copy of that file.

Final option smiling smiley and the most expensive sad smiley is to use my 'P2 Flow' to handle the complete P2 workflow.

Another (desperate) option, if you have P2CMS installed, is to go to L&T, check the timecodes, find the name of the mxf files (and the order, go to the P2 folder, locate the video and audio clips, drag them into FCP, align them manually, check for sync and continuity and export a SCQT movie and back that up. But this is a complete pain the a*se, and you're better off with Andreas' options.

I used 16GB cards on 3 different cameras .. Each card is having the same issue.
Yes they are spanned- even tho it was long form (we didn't stop for an hour plus) three separate clips of the exact same length were created.

have now tried using an HPX170 in firewire mode with no luck.

Still searching for a clue ...

It was simple- my oversight. Since we shot long form, OF COURSE the clips were spanned over 2 cards. Copy and paste ALL media to a drive first (naming them the name of each card A Cam 1e.g.) then bring both spanned cards into FCP for L & T and Tada!

Such a simple (and duh!) oversight on my part.

Thank you for all of the help!!

I'll check out P2 Flow ...
