FCP 7.01 broke my Desktop Preview!
Posted by: Nick Meyers (IP Logged)
Date: October 22, 2009 10:30PM

not really doing to much important at the moment,
so i upgraded to the latest 7.01 on one machine.

now i get very clunky playback on Digital Cinema Desktop Preview.

footage and sequences are ProRes PAL.

while the image plays perfectly in the viewer or canvas,
it has a "Dropping frames" look on the Desktop Preview.

when i turn mirroring OFF, i get NO payback at all,
just a frozen frame!

i trashed my prefs (that's trashed, not restored from a backup)
and the problem persists.

guess i'll have to try a re-instal, but wont get to that for a while,
so just wanted to post a warning.

if anyone else has run the update, could you check this, please?

thanks,
nick

OK on my seq with HDV mixed with ProRes.

I have the same issue (began with 7.0 and not solved yet). Also, if I show current frame, it will show a still on the Preview Monitor. When I press the space bar to continue playback, it flips the image up-side down.

MACPRO 2x2.26, OS 10.6.1, QTx and 7, two 24" LED backlit Displays ATI Radeon HD4870 and GeForce GT120 cards.

hi nick,

same thing happened for me - staggering playback on the digital cinema desktop preview. reverted back to 7.0 and it was working as per normal.

i'm wondering though if it's the pro apps update and not fcp 7.0.1.

cheers,
simon.

hey, simon.
maybe it affects people in the southern hemisphere smiling smiley

i ALSO had another problem, where i couldn't CAPTURE.
neither camera or deck were recognised.
hopped over to my iMac, and captured there.

this could be non-related??
haven't really gotten to the bottom of it yet.

hard to say as the ProAps update contained 7.01,
i see them as one and the same.
you think it's some other conflict?

very weird! usually a bug like this one is reported all over the forums, but i haven't found a thing on it except your post. maybe it's only a problem in PAL do you think? yes, what on earth have we done in australia to deserve this!

i reinstalled 7.00 on the suite that was updated to 7.01 after getting freaked out by the lagging, so i didn't spend enough time on it to find other problems.

the release notes for the 7.0.1 update says this:

"Other Final Cut Pro fixes include one where a Desktop Cinema Display Preview would tear the bottom of an image when using a Cinema Display with a MacBook Pro" (source:macworld)

maybe that 'fix' is part of our problem? but i can only speculate. personally i never noticed a tear when using my macbook, however it's the mac pro that i upgraded and encountered clunky playback problem with.

well i'm staying well clear of 7.0.1 that's for sure. thanks for posting the warning, here's hoping other people in the southern hemisphere find it before updating.

cheers.

maybe i was being a bit flippant.
i've been working with both PAL and NTSC footage,
so i don't think it's a PAL- only issue.
although it could have something to do with MAGNETISM (cue spooky theremin music)

you'd think so, wouldn't you,
but not many others have reported this, as far as i can tell.

i also have a BackMagic Intensity pro card in my machine.
i'm wondering if that has anything to do with it.

do you have any other hardware?

there's no other hardware installed, it's as shipped except for the extra ram (project is dvpal).

magnetism? are you editing next to a fridge covered in magnets?

I have exactly the same problem as the OP.

7.0 worked perfectly. Installed the Pro Apps update to FCP 7.0.1 now Desktop Preview is basically useless on my second monitor.

Tested with DV, DVCPRO, HDV and ProRes footage, all reacted differently but all dropped frames and stuttered. Turning mirroring off only displays a still frame in both Cinema Preview and the canvas.

Trashed prefs for all pro apps with the Digital Rebellion util, didn't help.

Weird thing is, it works on my primary display. Also, if I drag the Canvas window onto my second display, that works perfectly too. Only when I use my second display as a Cinema Desktop Preview does it go to crap.

I have to reinstall until this issue gets worked out. Ugh.

Nick, what OS and QT versions are you running? This might be a combo of all three things.

And what video card are you all using?

Try REFRESH A/V DEVICES?

Geforce 8800GT, refresh devices does nothing to help. As mentioned, trashed prefs, reboots, etc.

Update: using FCS Remover and then reinstalling didn't fix the problem. Creating a new user didn't fix the problem. Whatever caused this came in on the wings of the Pro Apps update and won't leave no matter what I do. How do I roll this back?

sorry about that, here are my specs:

OSX 10.5.8
3Ghz Octocore
4GB RAM

NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512 MB
running:
23" Cinema Display (Old school clear plastic type)
19" LG monitor 800 x 600 @ 60 Hz

FCP 7.0.1
QT 7.6.4

Additional Hardware:
Blackmagic Intensity Pro 2.1.1

wow, the BM drivers are a year out of date! they are now up to 3.3.2.
wish that thing had some sort of update notification.
i will try updating those,
then maybe pull the thing out!

Matthew Brodet at the Cow has the fix...

[forums.creativecow.net]

"Got the fix for all of you. In "library" folder on the Macintosh HD drive go into the "Quicktime" folder. Delete the "DesktopVideoout.component" file. Replace that file with the same file from Final Cut Pro 7.0. Be sure to be logged in as a administrator. If you need this file email me and I will send it."

Email him and get a file...

very cool!

thanks, Shane, it works!

i managed to get to that file on the FCP7 install disc.
here's what to do:

Load up your Final Cut Studio Install disk,
or if you've made a disk image (good idea) access that.

Inside that, notice that the "Instal Final Cut Studio" package is actually an Alias,
so right-click on that and "Show Original"

You'll be taken to a folder called "Installer" inside of which is another folder called "Packages"

Inside the Packages folder locate the VideoOutSupport.pkg,
right-click on it, and "Show Package Contents"

Inside the Contents folder, locate the Archive.paz.gz file.
Drag it to the desktop, and double click on it to un-zip it.

This will create a folder called "Library"
Open it, go to the QuickTime folder inside it,
and there you will find the file "DesktopVideoout.component"

Put this file in Macintosh HD > Library >QuickTime,
replacing the similarly named file there.

Digital Cinema Desktop Preview should now work.

cheers,
nick

Maybe we ought to put this in the sticky up top of this forum?

i just got a new Software Update notification:

"Pro Applications Update 2009-01 addresses general compatibility issues, improves overall stability, and addresses a number of other minor issues. This update is recommended for all users of Final Cut Studio, Final Cut Server, and Logic Studio."

it's relatively small,
i downloaded only and had a look,
sure enough, there is a new VideoOutSupport.pkg in there.

i'm pretty sure this is the official fix.

Funny, I just ran software update and didn't get it. On the other hand I didn't have the preview problem. I guess it knows is the Desktopvideoout is broken.

yeah, or possibly i'm getting the original update again because i changed that file over.

but i'm pretty sure this is a different update, with less issues addressed.

ok, i'll run it and see what happens.

well i installed it, and Desktop Preview BROKE again!

i quite FCP, ran software update again, and got the all clear.

then replaced the DesktopVideoout.component again,

Desktop Preview now works again.

and now when i run Software Update, i get the "Pro Applications Update 2009-01" notification again!

so i'm leaving it alone now.

thanks, Simon.

there's one small thing:
i do have smooth playback,
but i now all the options for the non-"main" screen preview the same.
used to be a difference between Preview, Full Screen & Raw,
now they all play full screen.

not a big deal for me.

I think you should definitely complain to Apple, though. Sounds like their updates broke something.
