Rendered files in ProRes or Test DV Timeline stutter on playback.Posted by mark@avolution
I am using RAID drives which can easilly play HD Uncompress (Huge U320 1.2TBx2)
To mitigate the stutter, which applies to all movement in rendered stills, rendered video, and rendered still frames with movement I tried... a)Reset and deleted the FCP 6.02 pref files b) Copied project and media onto second RAID - same stutter c) Switched timeline from native ProRes normal to DV copied and pasted, rendered -same stutter d) redigitized the proRes footage as DV to see if it was a ProRes issue - same stutter e) Repaired permissions on System Drive- same stutter The raw video played without rendering is fine, but once rendered will stutter. This is a NTSC ProRes 720x486 project..I have never experienced this before FCP 6.02 Dual 2.5Ghz PPC with 2G Ram, aja io, aja kona 2 I am at a loss..it is only a two minute production, but I can't have it going out with these issues... Any suggestions?
Kind of a dummy check question, but could it be an issue with inverted fields?
What exactly do you mean by stutter? Do you mean dropped frames? Are there any warnings on dropped frames? Also, can you transfer your footage onto a solitary Firewire 400/800 drive and see that works. www.strypesinpost.com
Not an inverted fields problem.
The stutter is say, a pan with hesitation as it crosses over the screen. FCP reports no dropped frames (this switch is on) No frames were dropped on ingest either. strypes Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Kind of a dummy check question, but could it be an > issue with inverted fields? > > What exactly do you mean by stutter? Copy the clips to the system drive and play from there. I don't feel like you can rule out the drive just yet. Also, are the stutters happening at the same spot every time, or random? Also, check the frame rates of the clips and your timeline. A mismatch will also cause stuttering playback.

I cloned the project and copied over played and tested on both 1.2TB U320 drives.
If I take the unrendered proRes source material and play it, it is fine on the viewer and NTSC monitor. The codecs match and the framerates all match in the bins If I apply an effect that requires a render (green, orange, or red). All of a sudden it stutters. This only started two days ago... My last resort is to upgrade FCP to 6.06, but who knows what if any this will do, as it is a one-way street of upgrade. I ported the capture scratch to Premeire Pro on a PC, and it has no problem with the footage..It is something FCP is doing. derekmok Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Copy the clips to the system drive and play from > there. What happens if you render and playback the clips from a different drive?

Either of the SCSI 1.2TB drives were tried, and both have at least 250G left.

The very first line describes the drives I use RAID U320 drives.
It can't be that old they are Huge U320 drive arrays, capable of 320MB/s. Unless you have optical drives, you might be using a varient of this. derekmok Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > SCSI? > > It's been years since I used one of those things, > but are you sure you can playback HD files from > those? I'm wondering if it could be due to a very fragmented drive. When was the last time you formatted the drive? Try running Disk Warrior on it. But before that, give it a good ol' FCP preference trashing and run the AJA system test to see if the drive is slow.

Good idea...I'll try this!

Mark,
Apply the deinterlace filter to each of the stills with "stutter" or as we call it here: interlace flicker. Render. Done. Kevin Monahan Social Support Lead, DV Products Adobe Adobe After Effects Adobe Premiere Pro Adobe After Effects and Premiere Pro Community Blog Follow Me on Twitter!
Check your timeline playback settings. You may be getting this oddness if your settings in each category are anything but FULLL quality. Anything else allows the system to compensate to some degree for a challenged CPU.
