Pulldown removal of a 3:3:4 pulldown?Posted by NoahK
Now before you roll your eyes and say, "Noah you're crazy, there's no such thing as a 3:3:4 pulldown!" Well actually there is, in this case we're talking about Super 8mm film shot at 18 frames per second and pulled down to 29.97, which requires a 3:3:4 pulldown. If you don't believe me, check out the film lab's own page on this:
[www.spectrafilmandvideo.com] That being said, anyone have a suggestion for how exactly to remove that pulldown? Can't seem to figure out what to tell CinemaTools, AFX or FCP to get ready of those interlaced frames at that cadence so I can have 18fps progressive QT files on the desktop. Suggestions welcome. thanks, Noah Final Cut Studio Training, featuring the HVX200, EX1, EX3, DVX100, DVDSP and Color at [www.callboxlive.com]! Wait. Hang on. Is it even possible to cut and edit real time at 18fps? Why not do a straight deinterlace?

i suspect there would be some very clever way of doing what you need involving speed-modification,
layers of video and various combinations of de-interlace filters and the "Blink" filter, if i wasnt so busy it's the sort of problem i'd like to get into. a simple de-interlace i think will add more problems, making the image a bit jerkier. why not just cut it as-is, keeping an eye on issues at edit points? otherwise, you could go back and telecine at 29.97fps so every frame of film falls on one frame of video. cinema tools wont do 18fps, but you could export as an image sequence, then open that in QT, and specify 18fps as the frame-rate there'd have to be a better way to change the frame rate by getting into the file and re-writing some line of code. (that's what Cinema Tools does) maybe Andreas would know?? nick
Thanks for the replies- cutting is not really the issue. These are mostly edited pieces that were transferred from Super 8. We just want to be able to watch them on the desktop without seeing the interlaced frames. So R/T playback in FCP not a big deal either. It's all going to be viewed clip at a time in QT player... Just thinking- how to get rid of that pulldown.

well the good news is that there are many whole frames in the equation.
11 / 12 / 22 / 33 / 33 // 44 / 45 / 55 / 66 / 66 / etc. you just have to figure out a way to surgically remove frame 2, 4or5, then 7, 9or10 etc, etc. a clumsy way i can imagine right now would involve creating a template of repeating frames of SLUG and TEXT, say so SLUG / TEXT / SLUG / TEXT / SLUG copy that 6 times to make 1 second copy that 10 times for 10 seconds. copy that 6 times for one minute. copy that X number of times. align against the super-8 so the pattern matches the pulldown pattern. do a find all for TEXT, and drag down to overwrite all the frames you don't wont. delete all text, delete all slug. remove all gaps (simple way select all, drag to overwrite drop-window in canvas) then export as an image sequence, open in QT as an image sequence set to 18fps OR export as is, with the fast motion, and re-write the appropriate line of code. oh, and fwiw, you cant create an 18fps sequence in FCP. nick

Gah- all that sounds really overly complex. Think we'll just live with interlacing...
