masking a small area of videoPosted by DM
I need to mask out a small section of the video frame at the lower right corner and blend in the surrounding background color. The background color is a gradation of yellow to brown, so it's not a solid color. It's a stage curtain with different colors of light hitting it. What is the best filter to start with? The image is distracting as it's a part of a sign (text) that got in the frame. ( not noticed by the videographer).

How small? You might be best off by doing a slight push-in on the shot and repositioning to crop it out. This is obviously most practical if you shot in HD for SD delivery, but as long as you only need (say) a ten-percent blow-up or so, it's worth trying out.
You won't find an automatic tool for doing this, like a spark or plug-in or whatever. If repoing the shot isn't an option, you're going to have to paint the offending element out by hand, which will be time consuming and (to your client) very expensive.
You say it's a stage curtain, is there another section of the shot where the stage curtain is in the same vertical plane, but without the sign? You can mask out the sign (with feathering), and put a copy of the clip behind it, moved down to show the "good" curtain in its place. Or look at CHV's Repair Collection.

to cut out a small section, like you want to,
you'd could use either the mask shape filter, or the 4-point garbage matte filter. if you use mask shape, you'll also need the mask feather filter to fill in the gap, try using the same shot on a layer beneath but displaced a bit specially. this works well in matching any slight camera (or curtain) moves. nick
