32G SXS transfer to data DVD
March 10, 2010 02:08PM
Hi there...

I have finished my first edit using SXS and need to supply the raw material to my client.

What is the workflow to get my BPAV content onto multiple data DVDs since a data DVD only holds about 8G?

I did not ingest all my raw into FCP...so this will come directly from the SXS card.

I do think in the future, I will include an external HD into the project cost..seems like a way to keep content in true HD and maybe less of a hassle?

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Don't. Just don't. Trying to break up the file structure will only lead to a GIANT disaster. Get an inexpensive USB hard drive and use that. Tell the client that if they want the raw footage that is the only way you can get it to them. or have them supply the drive.

Do NOT use DVDs. Period.

Are you shooting XDCAM EX?

Use this to move clips from the SXS card.

Hi Shane...

Thanks for the quick response.

I will take your advice...but what would the workflow be? (Like I said, I'm a newbie with SxS and have just finished patting myself on the back for being able to edit with it)

So

1) import BPAV into Sony Clip Browser

2)

3)

etc..etc...etc.

1) Move clips from card to archival drive

2) Import clips from card or archival drive with XDCAM transfer tool

3) Buy a hard drive or thumb drive big enough to store all that data

Don't mean to be a dolt...

Just want to be clear...

I inserted my SxS card and imported the clips into Clip Browser.

Can I transfer from Clip Browser to external hard drive...or should I have not used Clip Browser and gone directly to transfer tool?

NO no no no no no no no no no no NO!!!

Do NOT use any software to backup the cards. Well, you can, but not the CLIP BROWSER. That's for CONVERTING the footage for use in an NLE.

1. Insert card.

2. Make a new folder on your hard drive. Give this folder a unique TAPE name/number. This is your MASTER backup...just like a tape.

3. Drag the ENTIRE CONTENTS of the card to this folder. Or use something like Shotput Pro (www.imagineproducts.com) to do the offloading.

4. Give that drive to your client. Or copy it to another drive for the client.

5. THEN import into Sony software or FCP....That is the LAST step.

Okay Shane, you can kick me in the head if you want to, but doing SxS file copying/transferring with Clip Browser AND having CRC error checking turned ON gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling.

The clip browser is for transferring footage from the SXS card. I've been using it the whole week! You should never leave your footage on the card, as usually the card will be formatted before the next shoot. Always back that up onto multiple drives.

To archive media from an SxS card to hard disc or other media, the Sony XDCAM EX Clip
Browserapplication must be used.Copying individual clips via the Macintosh Finder will
result in unusable media on the target drive.

This is for importing footage/rewrapping it into QT to edit in FCP.

Strypes...

Do you mind bullet pointing your workflow?

I use the Sony SXS card reader...insert the card...card pops up on my mac desktop.

I have the edit workflow sorta down...but I need to get the raw from the card offloaded to the client. How do you transfer all the video on the card to external hard drive and/or data dvd?

Thanks for the help...I'm getting used to tapeless...

Thanks

>I use the Sony SXS card reader...insert the card...card pops up on my mac desktop.

Then run Sony's clip browser app. Your card should appear on the top window. In the bottom window, go to a destination, add a folder and name it. Go to the top window, select the clips you want and drag it to the bottom window. Then, import the clips you need either with L&T or Sony's XDCAM transfer tool (it seems that L&T in FCP7 works better than the XDCAM transfer utility).

Shane, I gotta say, I like Sony's Clip Browser. Kicks the hell out of P2CMS.

Thanks,

But really, my question is not how to get content into FCP....it's how to get all the raw video on the card to an external hard drive or burned on data dvd.

I have heard media has been lost using drag and drop (when it comes to external hard drive) so..just looking for the best step by step workflow.

Thanks!

You're not supposed to lose media via drag and drop. However, if you do want to be on the safe side, use the clip browser, as it performs a data integrity check.

Shane, sorry but you're WAY OFF on this.

ClipBrowser with CRC should be used for backup.
XDCAM Transfer is used to re-wrap to .mov for FCP.

ClipBrowser (use version 2.6) can certainly divide an SxS card for for optical disk (DVD, DVD+DR, BD, etc) and keep all folder structures valid.

This is my workflow and it's the one I recommend to others.

Copy with ClipBrowser 2.6 with CRC enable. Divide copied folders with ClipBrowser for optical disk backup.

Use XDCAM Transfer to re-wrap to .mov for use in FCP. Alternately you can use FCP Log & Transfer.

I'm not sure about using Clip Browser to divide the reel, as that may change the reel name, which may cause issues with recapturing.
