Edit To Tape: Insert vs. Assemble
March 17, 2010 04:22PM
I B&C a tape starting 58.00.00 until 59.30.00
Now Assemble edit with an IN point at 58.30.00

But, Aborted output (see previous posting if interested in thread).
Now that I want to go back to laying off, do I simply put an IN point in the TL and the same in the Edit to Tape window, or do I insert?

Thanks!

Assemble is clean in, dirty out. Insert is clean in, clean out. Just assemble.

INsert editing requires that they ENTIRE tape be black...have a signal recorded on it. Assemble editing is adding a signal. You can only insert edit if you already have that signal, say you go back and fix a shot later. But if this is a fresh tape, Assemble edit.

And you could have asked this on the same thread and kept things neat.

So after the Abort, my layoff stopped at let's say 01.59.22 so i resumed at 0155 with a new IN point
But when I went back and checked the IN point, the audio was shifting a few frames...

Odd...it shouldn't do that. Does it stay constant, or does it fix itself later? Can you insert edit a fix, from one point to another, say?

What are you outputting to? with what capture card?

It seems to fix itself but the problem is that I have to do that 4 or 5 times so it is too risky.
I'll layoff again, sections at a time.

Thx guys

Are you using firewire to control the deck?

Also, assemble editing is not necessarily a perfectly clean in.
It depends on the deck and it's maintenance.

The control track sequence at the assemble edit point can be disturbed enough to create problems
for devices that might control the tape playback later such as station automation gear and
particularly audio work stations doing laybacks.

You don't usually have a playback problem from an edit system, but other systems can be more finicky.

So it's best to do assembles well before program starts and do only inserts during program material. Or as Shane says, just black the whole tape first.

I agree with Sprocketz. I will only cut INTO a program if I'm inserting. Otherwise, with a half-done, aborted layoff, just go back to a few seconds before Start of Program. Safer that way.

And now it's time to dance!
