record live camera into FCPPosted by ajmax
Yea. Send the HD-SDI output into an AJA IOHD (or if you happen to have a Mac Pro on set with an HD capture card). Not sure if you have one on that camera.

will be shooting MiniDV and client wants to record to tape but also onto a hard drive at the same time.
I will have a Mac Book Pro on set but i don't think i have a capture card. unless it is built into the computer.... My initial thought was just to hook up camera via fire wire and hit log and capture... is it more than that?
First off Gerard, the HVX-200 doesn't have SDI out, only Component. The HPX-170 has SDI out...because we all clammored for it.
OK, if you are shooting DV, then just connect the camera to the computer via firewire, open LOG AND CAPTURE, you need to turn DECK CONTROL to UNCONTROLLED DEVICE, then you can capture. But note, the timecode of the captured file WILL NOT match the timecode of the tape. Not at all. Test this...that's all you need to do. And no, capture cards are not built into the computer. www.shanerosseditor.com Listen to THE EDIT BAY Podcast on iTunes [itunes.apple.com]
Thanks Shane. I didn't know that.
Without a capture card, it's kinda pointless, as one of the reasons you'll want to capture the live feed off the sensor, is to bypass codec compression, but you could record to DV50 on the P2 cards, and the compression isn't so great. If you capture the live feed off firewire, you still get whatever compression that was on the card/tape, but you won't have a useable timecode. www.strypesinpost.com
