Need to access mpeg files from a VCD disc. Movie files seem to be in AVSEQnn.DAT format. Guidance please!

I'm pretty sure the files on VCDs are MPEG files. Try opening it in MPEG Streamclip or VLC. You might need to change the file name extension to .mpg get it to be treated as an MPEG.

Yes, that works, however, as the quicktime file opens on the desktop, everything looks normal... got audio, got video. But when I import into FCP, the audio is lost. Que pasa?

MPEG files are often multiplexed or "muxed" which means that the audio and video are combined into one data stream. Useful for optical disc formats, not so useful for editing and such.
Your file is most likely in this form. Use MPEG Streamclip to extract the file to something suitable for editing, i.e. ProRes, DV, DVCProHD or whatever you have available. Here the audio and video files are separate streams or tracks combined into one media package.
