I have 3days on my hands with not much to do accept bug my crew. So while i wait for the footage from the shoots i thought i would try this.

I often give advice that some might term as not the best way. So to clear up some things i have taken screenshots of my assets and current settings. All i am trying to do is understand what the industry or big-time way of prep'ing a project for a smooth edit.

I would appreciate if you guys could tell me the steps that you would take to make sure that when you started to edit there were no hick-ups and the best output possible.

I will take screen shots and post them quickly isf you need any other info about the project or assets.

Delivery is to the web @720p as x264.

I think I would cry...

No, I'd tell the client that I need to convert everything to a common format, and that I will be charging them for every minute that I spend doing it.

And if I were to follow your sequence settings, I'd be pulling my hair out and swearing at the screen. And then throw my hands up, quit the project, and move to Hawaii.

Adding to Strypes suggestion (not mentioned on the forum - good sources of Final Cut Pro Training):

That time of the year, huh? I'll bang my head hard on the desk repeatedly and go into a hysteric fit. Then burst into spasms. Then convulsions... All that before I break into tears and move to Hawaii.

The object of this is not that i need training. It is simply the closest way for me to see how different my workflow is from the industry, which is often not exactly text book from things i have read.

what i would normally do is convert all but 2 of these clips to 720p30 or 720p24 in compressor. (i hardly ever get request for a particular codec)
Then open a new project and set the TL for 720p30 by drag and drop so that FCP sets the TL itself.

then set the appropriate a/v options for my BM Intensity.

oh i also do not capture for the edit. I capture to leave the video as it was recorded, and then use compressor. Not sure if this makes a difference in the edit.

oh here is why i would convert to 720p30 or 720p24 (prores HQ).

Mainly the frame rate, there are a lot of 24fps and 23 fps. I dont like to have many interpolated frames. Bring 24p up to 30p is only 6-ish frames interpolated per sec. 24p is only 1.2-ish per 2sec when converted from 23.98PAL.

23.98 PAL? NO such animal. PAL is 25fps.

No, that is a mess on the highest order. I don't think I have the time nor patience to tell you what needs to be done differently. EVERYTHING. I think that is possibly the worse batch of clips I have ever been faced with. And I was faced with 8 codecs and 4 frame rates before. But this takes the cake.

23fps? No...23.98fps. big difference.

Y'know, that sort of media list NEVER goes into my FCP project. Everything would be properly prepped up before it even goes into FCP.

I capture to a folder with avc and fcp for everything else. This fcp capture normally goes to the projects capture scratch folder.

However, finder doesn't tell me frame rate. So I normally put the clips in fcp so i can see the asset info. This where is how I judge what to convert.

I dont know if there is a better way to see that frame rate info without fcp.

Is there something i can buy that will allow me to see more clip info? maybe something that can analyze a batch? automator function maybe?

That has always bothered me about finder when browsing a clip.

FCP is the best place to sort a bunch of clips by codec or frame rate or whatever.

bring em in, sort by columns, put em into bins
i'd be surprised if all the formats and frame rates were handed to you all jumbled up like that.
(but not too surprised, i'll admit)
if you captured, you could have captured into separate scratch locations,
or use separate projects, which will put them in different scratch folders

anyway, after you've sorted in FCP you can use Media Manger to sort the clips in the finder into groups of like clips if you need to.
use the MOVE mode,
DONT delete unused,
base media file names on existing.

as for converting, i don't know as much as my NTSC friends.
they live with going between 23.976 and 29.97 all the time.

however, if the clips are for overlay only, simply using Cinema Tools to "Conform" the frame rate to a standard is very quick and effective.
the clips play faster or slower depending on the before and after frame rates, but its frame-for-frame, so no frame-weirdness.

you'd be surprised at what you can get away with.
i was recently handed 25 and 30fps footage.
i wound up conforming all to 29.97

obviously no good for sync material.

[mediainfo.massanti.com]

Although FCP lists the media in a table form, which can be quite useful, you generally don't convert anything in FCP, which means that if you didn't already sort out what are the different formats, you'll be using Media Manager to consolidate the different formats to a drive location so you can batch process them more easily.

I kinda do not want a speed change. Will any conforming i do in CTools change the speed?
I will probably use Compressor cause i want all 720p24 and compressor wont change the speed.

I have separated them by resolution i just need to break those down into Codec and frame rate. I am gonna try your little nifty looking tool and see if it speeds up the flow.

Here is something crazy.

the 23.98 frame rate is coming from my HMC when set to 720p24. Why is that? i thought it was just 24fps.
