FCP slowed to snail pace

FCP slowed to snail pace
July 16, 2010 09:44AM
All of a sudden FCP7 has slowed dramatically. I'm capturing DVCPROHD 1080/60i @ 29.97 fps from an HD 150 deck. When I launch the capture window it takes 10 or more seconds to come up, with the spinning beach ball, then when I finally get a clip captured and select it for batch capture (this is just one or two clips). it takes about 30 seconds of spinning beach ball before it gives me the capture dialog box, then again when i select OK it takes another 15 or 20 seconds of spinning beachball to get started. Also at the end of the capture there is along 20-30 seconds wait for the "Done" dialog box to appear. Basically everything seems slow in FCP. Also started new project to see if my other was corrupt.

I've trashed the preferences both manually and with Preference manager. I just reinstalled FCS from scratch about a week ago. Any suggestions.

I have a Dual quad core MacPro, 10 gigs of ram & my video drive is an xserve raid FCP 7.0.2, Kona 3 capture card , & QT 10.0.

thx...Jim Watt

An important factor is how full any of your drives are, including and especially your system drive, even though you may not think you are using it for FCP processing. Report on ALL connected drives, with percentage of free space on each.

OK, we can check that off.

You say you have 10 G RAM, but check About This Mac to see what it says right now. Twice in the last several months I've had ugly slowdowns (across the board) and discovered that instead of the 5 GB I physically have installed, About This Mac reported only 1 GB. I had to reseat the RAM cards and it all came back.

Hi Scott,

Thanks for your help. I'm reading 10GB of ram. I reinstalled the Kona drivers and things seem to have speeded up some but i still don't think it's running at optimum speed and i don't see anything in the activity monitor that would cause this.

thx...jw

Probably a typo, but do you mean you have 313.84 GB available on this drive, or some way smaller unit?

313 GB available.

Launch Console and see if there are any error messages. Do you have any background processing going on? Do you have any other computers also connected to the XServe?

No background processes going on that I can find and no other computer hooked to the raid.

Below is a snippet of messages I copied from console, but it's pretty much jibberish to me.

What time did FCP lag? Just the snippet from around that time will do.

So for whatever reason and I'm not sure why, everything has speeded back up to normal. I did download Macaroni which is a small utility that manages Unix issues and possibly that has made a difference. I really don't have a clue why things improved, but not going to argue with it fixing itself.

Thanks for all your help.

When you run into oddball slowdowns, disable the third party utilities, Menu Extras and the like first.

Is your system drive or media array journaled? Are you using Time Machine for system backup?

You're working in Snow Leopard? Using QuickTime X? Have you tried using the latest QT Pro 7.x instead? (I think it's 7.6.6.)

Is this a 2008 or 2009 Mac Pro? The 2009 Nahelem is a triple-channel RAM machine. It likes multiples of 3 for RAM installation for highest throughput. That is, 6, 12, 24 GB. This will yield the highest bus speed of 1067 Mhz.

Ideas...
