compressed vid on viewer out of synch on timeline

Persistant problem with all my clips (90gb worth, 10gb remaining unused on drives). Compressed looking video on viewer but in timeline the same clip is fine for picture quality but picture trails sound by anything between 2 and 22 frames.
I am using Mac G4 533 with FCP 1.2.5. File sharing and virtual memory off. Please. if you need more information I can experiment.

<HTML>Holy Cow. You captured 90gigs and hey are out sync? Yikes. Sync drift is almost always a result of miss matching audio sample rates. If you recorded at 48khz, then you have to capture at 48khz and so on. Also, speakers must be off when capturing or sync problems will occur.

My guess is that you audio capture rate does not match your sequence audio rate.
