Connect Sony J30 to Mac

I'm trying to ingest video from a Sony J30 into FCP on a mac mini.
I've tried the I-Link 400-800 firewire connection but FCP doesn't recognize the Sony deck.
Tried adjusting settings and easy set up but no luck. Do I need an AJA IO external device?
An if so can these be rented?

Well, via firewire, the only signal you'll get is DV. So you need to choose the DV/NTSC Easy Setup. Then you should see it.

Is that a "Capture Preset" option I should set in audio/video settings or a "Device Control Preset" setting.

The device control preset options I have are:
Firewire NTSC
Firewire NTSC Basic
Firewire NTSC NDF

The Capture Preset options are:
DV/NTSC 48khz
DV/NTSC 48khz Advanced
DV/NTSC 48khz Anamorphic

EASY SETUP. Choose DV/NTSC and ALL the settings are geared towards that.

Not sure if you can control the deck via firewire though...I think it is a signal only.

You may have to switch the J30 to iLink for control.

I can check my own deck later, if you need me to.

Hmm. If you have another Mac, will Fw 400 ports, you may want to see if the deck connects with the dv easy setup preset. Fw800-400 cables sometimes gets flakey over video signals.
