mask selection of an object

<HTML>Is there anyway that I can make a moving mask of any object, say a person, in movie clip with background that I wish to eliminate in FCP, rather than using a blue screen technique?

I can see that it would be possible and very laborious to achieve a result by compositing a series of the same movie clip and using the various masks (in the effects) to isolate specific parts of the object, say one for the forearm, and one for the upper arm, in each frame. There must be an easier way!
