Can VGA not carry HD?

Can't seem to get HD display on my new second monitor.
Just bought an LG 22" monitor with native 1920 x 1080 resolution. Hooked it to my new 21" imac via the "mini display port-to-VGA adapter."

The new monitor itself pops up a window saying "switch resolution to 1080 x 1920 for best performance" but on the apple VGA display window, the list of available resolutions tops out at 1600 x 1200, and even if i try this one it says "D-Sub out of range" and goes black. I do have it set at 60 Hz.

is this a VGA limitation? bottom line: can I get this monitor to work ? I don't feel I should have to buy a thousand-dollar apple cinema display to have 2 monitors.

You probably don't want to use a VGA connection, as it is analog and lower quality than a digital signal.

I'd suggest getting a Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter and connecting that via a DVI cable to your LG display.

And make it a dual link DVI

You would only need a dual link adapter if you are using it with a monitor having a resolution greater than 1920 x 1080 or 1920 x 1200...
