Monitor: Advice

I am on the market to purchase a monitor.
I was wondering/hoping that some of you guys were using some basic (therefore cheap) monitors. I see a lot of good deals out there but what to chose?

This is not for work, but for home projects: music videos, friends reels, etc... (so no broadcast).
No AJA or KONA box/connections.
My set up is basic: MBP and... that's it.
Price: $200 would be a splurge!

Thx

Well, you really need something with an H-IPS panel, but that would be pricier. Not broadcast quality, but decent colors. Below that range, I'm not sure what's good.

With $200 you are looking at VERY cheap (ie not good) computer displays and small HDTVs. And without a capture card, it won't be anything but a computer signal, not a full quality video signal. Yes, you can view the footage full screen...but that's about it.

What is out there for under $200? Well, look at Samsung computer displays...those are good.

This will probably be good enough for what you need.

I am still confused re: the capture card...
Why would I need one if I don't... capture per say. All I do is ingesting via SD cards.

You only need a capture card and monitor if you want to see exactly what your footage REALLY looks like. Because the Canvas/Viewer/Quicktime will not show you an accurate representation of your footage. Computer displays do not show proper video levels. So if you want to know what the footage looks like in reality, you need this.

But this is why there are low low end options out there. Decklink Intensity for $199. $199!!! Have a Laptop with Express34? Then MXO2 Mini for $449. Those and a decent HDTV will show you what you are working with.

MBP, no more Express card slot... And $449 is a lot.
But as long as my stuff isn't broadcast I should be fine with a decent monitor right?
Or is it really really off?

It's probably off. How off? It depends on your computer monitor. If you are going to DVD, then it will be shown on a broadcast TV or HDTV? I went with the MXO2 Mini, it works great!

>MBP, no more Express card slot...

They do...but only the 17" ones.

>And $449 is a lot.

If you are charging for your work, it shouldn't be. If clients want quality, then they have to pay for it. And you can only really provide that with confidence on an external monitor fed by a capture card. That's why it is called a "confidence monitor."

>But as long as my stuff isn't broadcast I should be fine with a decent monitor right?

Well, it won't look like what you see in FCP in QT, nor on a DVD. The monitor won't help with the QT option, but DVD...yes. Computer monitors don't show you true video colors...

>Or is it really really off?

it is off.
