2011 17" Macbook Pro Sonnet Tech Tempo Pro esata card?Posted by joeboo20
Will be purchasing a 2011 Macbook Pro 17" to replace my early 2008 15" MBP. I'm currently using an istoragepro Pocket View RAID via firewire 800. Was about to purchase a Sonnet Tech Tempo Pro esata express card to connect to my Pocket View instead of FW800. Since the the new MBP have been announced with Thunderbolt, now I'm a little hesitant to get the Tempo Pro and just stick to firewire 800 for now and wait a few months until Lacie's TB RAID is available. What do you think? Save the $150-200 and put that toward RAM instead?
I think Thunderbolt is going to be a slow rollout, both in available devices as well as adapters for current devices. So why wait? You'll have the only remaining express card slot in the entire Mac line with the 17" MBP so use it! And BTW, there re cheaper esata adapters than the Sonnet if you're worried about saving the $$.

Sonnet is probably the only ones not using the SIL3132 chip. www.strypesinpost.com
I gave up on the Sonnet cards when I got kernel panics in OS 10.6.4 and was running into drive issues. Not sure what caused it, but it was time to pay for good solid tech support and quality.

Damned. Typo. Happens when you do forums on the phone. I meant I switched to the Sonnet cards from the cheaper ones that used the SIL3132 chips. Haven't encountered a kernel panic yet, but I haven't been cutting on my home rig lately.
