Internal Raid x 4 drives: Where to put system/apps?

I'm considering striping my four internals raid 0 for media, so I'm wondering where I should put my system/library/user/applications folders.

Partition on the raid? External firewire drive?

Noooooo...not good idea...MUST HAVE SEPARATE BOOT DRIVE! It's a no-brainer given. You do not want your apps working on the same drives as your media.

When life gives you dilemmas...make dilemmanade.

Right. That's always been the case, and I would never have considered it, except it seems a shame not to be able to stripe all those internals together, and I figured maybe with those screamin' drive speeds it might be workable now.

But if not, is there any harm or any gotchas associated with putting the startup / apps / library, etc, on an external firewire?

Other than significant loss of speed when using an external? no.

Pro Caddy, Pro Caddy 2 here.

I am doing this in my 8 core.
4 drives RAID 5 with the Caldigit RAID card.
System drive in the bottom optical bay.

I believe Shane Ross did this with a home made rig.
