Multiple formats

I am putting together a spot with clips with differents specs: I have close to 10 various frame rates and sizes.
I did a batch conversion to Apple ProRes 422 via compressor but now that I bring the clips in the timeline I still have the red render line for some clips....
Wasn't compressor supposed to take care of this?
Did I miss something?

Yeah, you must have missed something. Check each clip in FCP to see the format, and figure out the difference between the ones that are ok and the ones that need rendering.

If you used the Pro Res 422 preset in Compressor and didn't manually change the frame rate in the video encoder settings and the frame size in the geometry tab , Compressor's going to keep the original frame rate and size. You would need to reconvert everything using a preset that limits the output file to a single frame rate, size, etc.

I have 60i footage I need to convert to 30p (29.97 progressive), in order to that do I simply bring it into compressor, change framerate and export? Are there better methods?

I have a feature length project with clips in multiple frame rates, differing sizes, and shot on multiple formats. I created a 30fps Apple ProRes (HQ) sequence, thinking that I could edit all of the different clips in there and just render out what I need. However, it doesn't look perfect.

I'm using FCP 7.0.3. Do I need to have a Kona card, or is there another way to get good quality from all of the clips?

To deal with different frame rates, you should send those shots to convert in Compressor, or better yet, send it to a local post facility with a hardware converter such as an Alchemist or a Teranex.

There's basically no situation in which you'd want to deliver a feature-length project at 30p. You'll have to get it converted to 24p for festivals, for distribution, whatever. So double-triple-check that 30p is really want you want. Odds are overwhelming what you really want is 24, and everything off-rate should be converted to that rate.

They may be able to take both. Heck. Projectors are able to do interlaced nowadays.

I have files in the following formats:

1920x1080 23.98 XDCAM EX 1080p24
1280x720 23.98 HDV 720p24
720x480 29.97 DV/DVCPro-NTSC
1280x1080 29.97 DVC Pro HD 1080i60
1920x1080 23.98 H.264

I have a Black Magic Card as well.

Basically what I'm trying to figure out is what's the best way to integrate these differing formats into one sequence.

And I have to make my final delivery in 29.97 interlaced.

That's not that bad, actually. Taking the 24p stuff to 60i is trivial. Your 1080p24 material just needs to have pulldown added, and your 720p24 stuff needs to be upscaled first to 1080p24, then have pulldown added. Those are easy; any post house that does dubbings with standards conversion can do that for you.

The NTSC stuff is going to look like complete and total ass no matter what you do. So minimize that, would be my recommendation, then spend all the monies to get just the necessary frames (with handles, obviously) upconverted for your final master.

Ok that's helpful. Since I don't have very much money do you think doing it all through compressor would work?

Can you get @#$%& into a format that you can edit into your timeline? Sure. Can you do it right without the proper tools? Of course not.
