As editor on a short film

Hi there - I've just accepted an offer to edit a short film, working with the director and cinematographer. It's a low/no budget piece but of course everyone has and shall be giving it 300% from start to finish. The director has worked on many major feature films in varying capacities, and it's understood this is something he's pulled together of his own accord.

My question is: would you have advice on how i may give and get the most out of the project as an editor? What have your experiences been when undertaking such work?
