OT-Playing around with 21:9 aspect ratio.Posted by mark@avolution
I have been rendering some R&D animations in 21:9 aspect ratio,
which is basically 25% wider than the now standard 16:9 aspect ratio. I am curious as to how popular the 21:9 aspect ratio might become, because it seems that most recording devices and projection devices are 16:9, present day. As there are some knowledgable pros on this board, I am wondering what the "word on the street" is on 21:9 catching on as a recording and projection standard in the future. Thanks Mark Pigott
R & D? Where will it play? It's like looking through a letter slot. I don't see that catching on, it's way way more removed from golden section...

this is the first i've heard of 21/9, so mine is not the "word on the street"
that's 2.33:1, so close to 'scope, which IS a fairly popular cinema screen ratio. so with a 21/9 set, 'scope films will be full screen, (stretched, presumably) everything else pillar-boxed. 4/3 will look very lonely in there! the cynic in me says it's just a bunch more things to go wrong as people struggle with their remotes to find the correct aspect ratio (or just ignore it as usual). 4/3 stretched out to cinemascope ratio... i think it will catch on a little, but not much. nick
