transferring files to ugh Premiere

Working normally on an iMac, FCP 5. Horrible task - I have to edit on a client's premiere, and brought my clips with me on a disk-on-key. Premiere won't permit me to import my clips. Anybody got any ideas about how to continue - converting files or something? TIA

FCP 5? Wow, that's pretty darn old. If that has an XML File Export option, then it's quite simple to move your project to Premiere.

But the big question is, what type of files do you have and what version of Premiere Pro does your client have?

With FCP 7 and CS 5 or CS 5.5 it's as simple as......

Export XML from FCP.

Import XML to Premiere Pro.

Start editing. The entire project, sequences and bins all transfer brilliantly to Premiere Pro. I show how in a tutorial on Vimeo.

That's a great runthrough, Walt. If Adobe can clean up the interface clutter a bit more (or allow us to strip it down to heart's desire) I think it'll be a premiere choice- sorry- for the future of traditional 4-corner editing.

The 3rd party app you're thinking of has been released by Phil Hodgetts/Greg Clarke at www.intelligentassistance.com, FCP7toX XML transfer, for those to whom FCPX is another viable future of editing.

You can trim down the PPro interface quite easily and roll your own layouts just as in FCP. The UI is a lot more detailed because there are a lot more features and more powerful tools (the title tool to name one), but you can make and save an FCP-ish layout without much effort at all.

That was in Premier Pro cs4 also. I started in cs4 as a way of pulling entire TLs into AE. I still have automatic duck also from the pre cs4 days.

i like premier. The way you CC in premier is a bit different but it better than fcp for CC (more native curves). I would say that PPcs5+ and MC are the best nle's out now. There is more native integration in PP4+ than MC but they both are excellent.

Ohg, I've done that, to the closest possible look, including bringing up the grey. But it's still a lot chunkier with lots of detailed widgets I don;t need.

Fine. Now hide 'em.

Fcp's title tool has a tiny (very tiny) saving grace- you can call up the tool and change text with Keyboard shortcuts alone. But what other tools are there in PPro?

Other Tools / Features:

The title tool is more than just a simpler titler. It is fast and easy to create lower thirds, animations, shapes, FX etc. Just browsing through the UI quickly, other items large and small that I'm finding are especially useful:

Resource Central
One button click to create a new folder.
One button click to switch between list and icon view
One button click to create a new sequence, bars and tone, slug, matte, etc.
Media Browser with advanced search options
Read RED files
Editable history
One click clip info
Multiformat timeline
One click metadata info
Dynamic Link
Media Encoder with user defined presets function
Rate Stretch Tool
One Right Click resolution control
One click Screenshot
CS Live
Very precise effects controls tool

and the list goes on.

And, it is indeed easy to customize and save the layout. If there's whistles, bells an widgets you still don't want to see, just click on the x in the corresponding tab and turn 'em off. One right click to restore defaults if you mess it up.

Clay, thanks. What is the advantage of CS Live? Is it similar to Avid Marketplace menu item?

AFAIK CS LIVE is a subscription service after 6 months or so.
Haven't found it that useful.
