big files (full hd) doesn't works properly with FCP 7

Dear Experts,
FCP 7 doesn't works properly with a big file in the timeline.
How I have setting FCP 7 to works with a big file (250 gigas) ?

Break up the file.
Or use a faster storage drive.

"Doesn't work properly" doesn't tell us much. Is it slow? Does it crash? Does it stutter on playback? Does it play with corruptions/pixellations?
