Hinge/folding text effect filter?

I'm looking for an effect that's like text being "hinged" up or down.

You can see an example in this trailer, at the 1m 42s point.

And in this trailer, at 38s:

I'd love to know how this effect is done. Can anybody help?

Path Follow in Photoshop, Gimp, 3ds Max.

This is a simple SWING effect available in FCP 7 and probably earlier. Check your "3D simulation" list.

The Gotcha I experience is that, applied at its default, astoundingly, it doesn't work.

You need to apply the effect, step into the effect dialog, and hit the teeny tiny "reverse effect" arrow on the right side and then it works. You can tailor the clock direction from which it hinges into frame. Very classic trailer stuff.

interesting, i just stumbled over this. the teeny tiny button is so tiny that i can't even find it (could be FCP6, of course). but that aside, it seems to work only as a transition for me. i just put the good old 'SAMPLE TEXT' there and nothing happens. then a added a duplicate of the clip and then it works. that's not good, because then the plain text stays on screen, so i deleted the text from the first clip, but left the actual (blank) clip in place. effect is gone. weird.

I use the Basic 3D filter for this effect, by keyframing the Rotation parameters.

I just went to have a bit of play with this. Unfortunately there does not seem to be a way to change the anchor point with the basic 3D filter. The anchor point is the place you want an image to pivot around. There is such a setting in the basic motion tab, but the 3D filter does not recognize it. If you have access to Motion or After Effects this is a pretty simple thing to build. Without a third party plugin I don't see a quick way to do this in classic Final Cut.
