Weird FCP problem -- reinstall FCP 7?

I have had FCP 7 for many years, worked with no problems. No some weird stuff happening. When I want to put a fade on an audio track, I go up to Effects and select Audio Transition and instead of putting the audio fade on the timeline, a "Default US Keyboard" thing pops up as if I want to customize the keyboard. I can't get it to put an audio fade, it thinks I'm calling for this default keyboard menu thing to come up.

Should I reinatall FCP 7?

If so, is there any danger to FCP projects I'm working on? Wouldn't want to screw anything up. Also, would I need to remove FCP 7 first?

Anyone come across anything like this?
