i've got a preview clip in mp4 format
codec is "AVC Coding"

when i export to ProResLT using QTplayer i get a white a screen
Mpeg Streamclip "cant prepare the movie"
and my droplet just freezes.

what would work, do you think?

weirdly, rendering in FCP is working, but rather slow.
i'd like to be able to do these in the background, so any tips would be most welcome

ooop... the compressor droplet has finally responded and sent the clips to Batch Monitor

P*vtube works pretty well for this

why are mp4s so hard to convert?

thanks,
nick

QuickTime Player and MPEG Streamclip should have worked if not for the codec. Did you try ClipWrap?

There is a very noticeable lag when using Compressor droplets on processor intensive media. It rarely crashes, but it will can take quite a few minutes for it to start working. It was better in FCS2.

no, should i?
ClipWrap will do a transcode, not just a re-wrap?

how about Compressor itself?
maybe i should just use that.

I find Compressor even worse than droplets. Droplets lag. Compressor can get crashy.

Nope, ClipWrap can't do it at all.

Just curious. Are those from the GoPro cameras?

the files are from Video Blocks.
once you have an account there, there are two file format available for DL,
i've been grabbing the smaller .mp4s until we settle on our "hero" shots.

I can keep using the droplet i guess,
or DL the larger files and build up a library!

i know we all hate P*vtube for their scurrilous spamming, but it did seem to do the job (i tried a demo)
i also looked at it for converting an mkv file to .mov
i only tested it, but it seemed like it might have been faster than compressor.

That's interesting, because Videoblocks claims their smaller files are H.264. Obviously they are not. Maybe you should contact them -- if pro editors can't use their products without resorting to a spam-based, possibly unethical company like Pa*tube, it's really not a good sign.

Avchd/avc is h.264. But there are many h.264 profiles and some are more processor intensive than others.

my feeling is more that Compressor should do it's job better!
to be fair, i don't have the latest X-compatible version. maybe it does.

It's just utterly bizarre that QuickTime Player and Compressor can't read the codec but Legacy FCP can. That never happens.

A very wild guess could be that there is an alpha channel attached to the movie. I've seen something like that on Animation movs. But it's just a wild guess.

I didn't know H.264 codecs could handle alpha channels. Is there one that can?

It's not a format limitation. Avid for example, stores alpha in packed YUV formats. There was an old workaround to avoid the QT gamma shift and it involved tweaking the alpha channel. Let me try mucking around with that to see what it does.

I tried mucking around in QT. can't replicate it. Can your upload it?

Does it have a damaged header? Sometimes QT repair can make things work more happily in QT.

I had an mp4 last week that nothing wanted to convert or hardly play. Was about to tell the client this ain't gonna cut it, when I decided to launch the copy I forgot I had of Premiere. Bam! No problem. Exported to a quicktime ProRes file. Done.

So, in the event you happen to have a copy of Adobe Premiere around . . . Mine was version 4.2.1.

Cheers!
