I have been given the task of assembling a FCP 7 multiclip timeline (not necessarily using the multi-clip function of FCP 7).

  • 5 angles + pcm audio to be synced
  • several hours
  • Main 2 angles: P2-DVCPRO HD, 720*960 p , 23.976, 4:2:2 (ingest: L&T-native (DVCHD...)
  • Secondary 2 angles: AVCHD-H.264, 1920*1080 iT, 29.970, 4:2:0 (ingest: L&T-ProRes 422)
  • Secondary 1 angle: AVCHD-MP4 , 1920*1080 p , 29.970, 4:2:0 (ingest: Comp-ProRes 422)

The target is both std DVD and web HD (720 or 1080)

Any suggestions?

Thanks, in advance.

Is it 23.976 fps or 29.96 with a pulldown added? I recall Panasonuc had a quirky naming convention, where 24p meant 29.976 with a standard pulldown. Cuts between the different frame rates will look funky.

With 5 angles you will be doing an offline/online because your machine is unlikely to play back 5 angles of ProRes. You can try transcoding few clips to ProRes proxy HD and see if that gives you any love. That should be fine if you're on a MacPro with decent storage. If that doesn't work out, then do an SD offline and relink to your high rez ProRes transcodes when you're done.

Panasonic has 24p (23.976fps with 2:3 pulldown added to make 29.97fps), 24pN (actual 23.976fps) and if I remember right, it also has 24pA (23.976fps with advanced 2:3:3:2 pulldown). Very confusing.
