What encoding software are folks using for broadcast delivery?

Hey all,

Delivering our second broadcast spot and the delivery specs continue to astound me. Not only is every satellite/cable outlet asking for distinctly different files, but their posted specs don't often match up with what's available in Compressor/Adobe Media Encoder.

(For example: most outlets want a "Closed GOP" as if it's a box you can check off in the settings, but no dice.)

Just curious what the rest of you are using to compress files for broadcast; is there software that gives you full control over all the media settings (GOP, GOP Sequence, bitrate. etc.)?

TIA, JVK

Adobe Media Encoder, Compressor or even mpeg clipstream.

Telestream Episode is recommended for outlets that want things encodes exactly as they broadcast them. I rarely get asked for that, I'm either asked for a tape (HDCAM, HDCAM SR) or a ProRes or DNxHD Qt that they then encode to their needs on their end.

But I know a lot of people who deliver broadcast MPEG for clients, and they use Episode.

If we're talking about MPEG-2, "Closed GOP" is a box (circle) you can check off in Compressor: Inspector > Encoder > GOP.

Yea. In some cases Compressor has very limited settings for Mpeg/Mpeg2 formats.

...depends on what the broadcaster wants in a format. ALmost everyone is taking digital delivery now (except for a stubborn few). I have used good old QT Pro for uprez to ProresHQ for broadcast. Haven't touched a tape in...jeez...2 years.

When life gives you dilemmas...make dilemmanade.

Shane,

Which version of episode are you using and did you get any of the extra options like x264 or the pro audio?

I also wonder does it play well with smoke, fcp or premier. like exporting via episode?

Episode or Episode Pro for broadacst... the most flexible and widest complement of codecs, plus a way to hook into Compressor's ProRes codecs.
