How do uninstall FCP 6.06 to install FCP 7? What are the steps?

Hi,
I've been using FCP 6.0.6 to edit a documentary and need to install FCP 7 because it has a better find/search feature for the close to 250 hours of footage that I have. Do I need to to uninstall FCP 6.0.6 first, and if so, what are the steps that I take to do so? Any step by step responses would be much appreciated?
Thank You,
Patrick

hi, Patrick

in your case i would NOT uninstall FCP6
i would rather, RENAME it (add a 6 to the end, for instance)
that way you will keep it when you install FCP7.

backup all your FCP6 projects, too, before you start using FCP7.

there was no improvement to the search function that i know of between 6 and 7.
maybe i've forgotten as it was a while ago.
what improvements are you aware of?

(or are you talking about FCPX????)

cheers,
nick

Nick,
Thank you for the post, it was very helpful. I was told that in the find feature on fcp 6 you could only search one bin at a time, and on fcp 7 you could search the whole project. This is my understanding, is that not the case?

I was also told that I needed to bump my project up to at least fcp 7 in order to make a film print in the end. Do you know if this is true?
Thank You,
Patrick

hi Patrick.

neither of those are true.
searching in the browser, the default in FCP is to search the whole project.
after you open a bin in it's own window it is available for searching.
FCP also offers the option of searching in ALL open projects.

these three options are available in a pull-down menu in the search window
(and have been as long as i remember)

Making a film print is dependant on many things,
but none are necesarily specific to FCP7.

whats your plan for getting to film?

HOWEVER,
FCP7 does offer lots of improvements, os it might be worth upgrading.
it's been so long i cant remember what they are, but Wkipedia lists them, i think.

if you are deep into your FCP6 project, you might be best off staying there.

Nick,
Define "deep"? Now I'm confused and don't know what to go with FCP 6 or FCP 7? Since I just bought 7, please give me some good reasons why I should use 7 over 6, in order to rationalize my purchase.

Generally, my plan was to "finish" on FCP X, and somehow take the finished final cut of the documentary and make a film print based on the original camera (Sony EX3) files, the "negative" so to speak. Then get a composer and do a sound mix and complete the print. Does this sound doable?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated!
Thank You!
Patrick

FCP 7 gave you more ProRes codecs, and some more under the hood stability such as compatibility with later model cameras, but not much else. I concur, stick with FCP 6 and finish with FCP 6. Don't go to FCX for a "film finish." FCX is not designed with that in mind at all. FCX is for web and other tapeless finishing options, and doesn't even GO to "film out." Film out is now a DCP (Digital Cinema Projection) and is another process entirely.

Besides, FILM is rarely done today...if at all. DCP is the way to go now for that.

Hi, Patrick.

if you've worked on your project for a long long time, and have lots of subclips, muticlips,
and linked clips.

from memory updating projects from 6 to 7 is pretty painless, and those things have not proved problematic for me,
but i am generally upgrading old projects that i have finished editing, and only need to find something, or demonstrate something to a class.

you probably got 7 for a reason, so maybe just go with it.

here's a list of improvements:
the speed change alone would be worth it.
coloured markers are useful.

DEFINITELY run software update and move up to FCP 7.03

as i say, safely backup all your projects before opening them in 7.
maybe spend a day exploring , and working, and see if there;s any weirdness that you feel is problematic.

FINISHING
i'd say you'd be best off doing you CONFORM (re-building the project as XDCam) in FCP7, or whatever you decide to edit in.
then passing it on to your grading and finishing platforms.

i would recommend Resolve over FCPX for the grading.
Resolve also has good finishing tools such as stabilisation, great slo-mo and up-scaling,
so you could finish in there.
