"Out of memory" errors

Been recently getting a lot of "Out of memory" errors recently.
One project file in particular seems to be the most prone, it is a sizable project file, 200mb.
All media and project file are connected via an external usb3 drive that is 80% full.

Wondering what is the cause and solution? I do have 24gb of Ram.

project size it pretty large.
too large, really.
you should look into splitting it.

what sort of media are you working with?
how complex are your timelines?

do you work with lots of sequences open?

Working with pro res 422 1080p, not working with a lot of sequences open, 3-4 at the max, but there's probably 40-50 sequences contained in the project. I figured it could be the project file, so I'll split it but it didn't just balloon to this size, it has been around 170-200mb for quite awhile and worked fine, only recently did it start crashing.

It's just footage (no nesting), mostly straight cuts, some dissolves, my master timeline but I guess I would need to know what you mean by "Complex"?

longer sequences with lots of graphics or effects.

i'm getting out of memory errors a bit working with XDCam footage with lots of subtitles.
we've also got A+B cameras displaying side by side.
sometime a 3rd camera which is a different codec (Prores)

if i keep too many sequences open i get problems, so i close them down.
closing the canvas altogether helps for a while,
but eventually a re-start is required

lots of markers might add to the problem, not sure,
but extended markers will drastically slow you down when zoomed in

are you keeping older versions of edits in your project?
most of them can be put into another project

Yes, I'll split it.

Update - removing some of the older sequences did help.
