Importing Sony files into FCP

I've recorded some video with a Sony EXCAM. Obviously, they play nicely with Vegas, but at home I still have my FCP7 on a Snow Leopard machine. The Mac/Quicktime complain that it can't read the files. Neither the QT player, FCP, or compressor recognize the files. The VLC player has no problems, however.

Is there a particular trick or setup I can use on my system to edit with FCP?

i'm no expert, but i'd have a look at the Sony XDCam Transfer software
Sony also offer a FCP Log& transfer plugin
