External Hard drive space vs performance?

How much space do you typically want to leave free on an
external harddrive that you will be editing from? 10%?

yeah something like that.

to tell the truth, if it's just a drive full of video media, i've often let them fill up more than that,
thinking that there's not much file action other than reading going on.

if there's renders, etc, and lots of smaller files being added regularly, i try to leave a fair bit free,
not letting it get to the 10% limit

It depends what you're trying to edit. Spinning hard drives get slower the fuller they are, plus you never want to be running out of space at an inconvenient moment.
